This policy is applicable for all tests, including IELTS General, Academic, UKVI, and Life Skills.

You can cancel your registration for the IELTS test at any time before taking the test by notifying your test center. To cancel an IELTS test, log in to the Candidate Portal and upload supporting documentation/evidence and submit the cancellation request.

Refund conditions depend on when the cancellation occurs and whether any exceptional circumstances apply.

  • More than 14 days before the exam:

If you cancel your IELTS test registration more than 14 days before the test date (excluding test day), you will receive a 75% refund of the total test price.

  • Within the period between 14 days and more than three days before the date of the first section of the exam:

If you cancel your IELTS test registration within 14 days and more than three days before the date of the first section of the test (excluding that date), you will receive a refund of 50% of the total price of the test.

  • Three days before the first section of the exam:

If you cancel your IELTS test registration within three days of the first section of the test, you will not receive a refund.

  • The day of the test or after:

No refund will be given if you cancel your IELTS test registration on or after the test day.

You can justify exceptional circumstances at your examination centre before the examination and up to three working days after the examination date if you do not attend the examination. Your examination centre will respond within seven working days of receiving your written request. Your examination centre will assess the exceptional circumstances of your case.

If your examination centre approves your case, you will be refunded the full amount paid minus a 25% administration fee.

If your examination centre does not approve your case, the conditions in section A.1 will apply.

We consider the following to be exceptional circumstances:

  • Serious medical conditions that prevent you from attending or performing normally on the day of the examination; these require supporting evidence in the form of a medical certificate from a qualified doctor.
  • Death certificate of a family member.
  • Compulsory military service.

In some circumstances beyond the test center's control, we may be forced to cancel your exam. Such cases include, but are not limited to, extreme weather conditions, natural disasters, civil unrest, and strikes.

In such circumstances, your test center will provide you with as much information as possible and give you a choice between:

  • A full refund.
  • Modify the exam date to a future date that is convenient for you.

The selection of the exam type and module, as well as attendance at the exam, is solely the responsibility of the candidate. Please note that all exam sessions are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice. The British Council is not responsible for any additional expenses incurred by the candidate in connection with the exam, including but not limited to airfare, accommodation, transportation, or meals.

You can request a single change of date for your IELTS exam if you are within the following deadlines and times (as applicable):

You must select a new test date - if and when available - within three months of your original test date. If you wish to change your test date to one that is later than three months after your initial test date, we will treat your date change as a cancellation.
