The right test at the right time

We know that students’ learning and assessment needs evolve as they grow. Our innovative, age-appropriate tests are designed to cater to academic milestones, enabling students to perform at their best, whatever age they are.

Opening the door to opportunities for learners all over the world

The British Council engages with over 50 million teachers and learners of English worldwide each year – teaching and assessing English are at the heart of what we do.

We have helped learners all around the world develop English skills, build connections and access opportunities, for close to 90 years.

Why you should choose our English tests

Our English Assessments for Schools provide age-appropriate testing that lets students shine at every stage of their education.

Help them do their best:

  • Greater engagement – Teachers and parents know that engaged, motivated pupils do better.
  • Fast and reliable – We use the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, to get accurate results to students quickly and efficiently.
  • Supportive assessment – We don’t use tests that pass or fail students. Our tests measure students as they improve their proficiency.
  • Keeping parents informed – Parents can see what their children have learned and how they’re doing compared to their classmates.
  • Mapped to an international standard, the test is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) – Easily understand the results with detailed candidate score reports.
  • Not aligned to any specific curriculum or course – Testing can be easily integrated into existing systems.
  • No specific preparation required – Students simply need to become familiar with the test format.

We have created a quick guide on effective ways of approaching English language assessment in schools.

  • Primary English Test (pre A1 - B1)

The more they're engaged, the better they perform It’s easier to engage younger children when they’re exploring topics that excite and interest them. That’s how we build motivation into the British Council’s Primary English Test for students aged 9 to 12.  Our Primary English Test is designed to help young children perform with confidence and do their best.

  • Secondary English Tests

Tests to reflect your students’ world  We know how important it is to give students confidence. It's what helps them do their best in secondary-level English exams. That’s why we test students aged 13 to 16 using scenarios that they encounter every day. This way they can focus on familiar, useful topics – without feeling unduly stressed.

  • Upper Secondary English Tests (A1-C2)

A Test that unlocks the future for students aged 16 plus Students start thinking more seriously about their future studies and careers in secondary school. Those who can prove their English language level with an accredited test have a big advantage – both at university and in the workplace.  The British Council’s Upper-Secondary English Test helps young adults showcase their English skills.
