Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is more than a book about magic: it is a magical book! The first novel in the Harry Potter saga started a worldwide phenomenon – massive book sales, blockbusting movies, a global legion of devoted fans, the transformation of an unpublished author into one of the most famous and widely read writers on the planet… not to mention how it turned millions of children on to reading! In these sessions, we will discuss the novel and look at the many elements that make it such a great read, from its unforgettable characters to its thrilling plot and the echoes of a long history of UK literature and mythology.

Jane Austen Remixed
February - March, Thursdays 6:00 pm. (2 modules, 8 weeks)
Elizabeth Bennet has been very busy in the past couple of centuries: she came to fame in 1813 as a fiery yet oh-so-proper heroine; was then reborn in the mid-1990s as Bridget Jones, London singleton mess extraordinaire; and 13 years later discovered a passion for fighting the walking dead. In these sessions, we will look at what makes Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies such enjoyable heirs to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. We will discuss each of the books, and explore the reasons why Jane Austen remains popular, current and most remixable.
