An international festival which celebrates women and girls.

WOW Festival Rio took place for the first time in Latin America from 16 to 18 November 2018, in a partnership between the South Bank Centre (UK), Redes da Maré (Brazil) and the British Council.  The festival brought together artists, writers, politicians, comedians and activists to celebrate achievements in gender equality.

After 18 months of intensive planning, approx 30,000 people participated in a programme that combined over 140 events, including discussions, artistic performances, activism projects and a local social entrepreneurs market. Everything related to the event can be seen here http://festivalmulheresdomundo.com.br/.

WOW Rio was a cross-SBU initiative, led by the Arts and Society teams, with valuable contributions from colleagues in Brazil. Women from 37 communities in Rio participated in the festival’s programming to ensure there was local representation.

Now in over 20 countries and growing, WOW is a celebration of the stories of women and girls – it also takes a frank look at the obstacles that prevent them from achieving their full potential.
