The renowned British DJ arrives in Havana to celebrate three years of broadcast of The Selector from the British Council through Cuba Tonight from Radio Taino.
Live broadcasts from a Cuban radio station that was founded 33 years ago, formed part of the celebration of the two decades the British Council has been in Cuba, promoting cultural connections and educational exchanges.
“We are very excited to broadcast from Radio Taino. Cuba Tonight is an incredible show. I’ve been lucky to do live programmes twice from Havana, to know many Cuban DJs and bring their music to the United Kingdom; and you can see that the people know and connect with The Selector. It is very successful” says Goldierocks.
The programme airs every Friday at 11:00pm as a window to modern British music. It encourages young creators of different genres, such as dubstep, soul, hip hop, independent and folk music. They have a global audience of three million people from 46 countries.
According to Alberto Cordoví, director of Cuba Tonight, this was an extraordinary experience where “two teams joined during broadcast, with different ways of doing things, and we all learned”.
Goldierocks had two performances - at the Salón Rosado de la Tropical with Laboratorio Nacional de Música Electroacústica on Friday November 23, and at Fábrica de Arte Cubano on Saturday, November 24. The DJ met several Cuban DJs to discuss the experiences and techniques common to both countries.
This connection between the British Council in Cuba and Radio Taino has fostered other exchanges and the foundation of Concurso de Jóvenes DJs Music Dos, to encourage and develop musicians’ work, and the exchange of electronic music between the United Kingdom and Cuba.
